Plano Exciting Future

Plano has had one of the fastest growing populations
in the Metroplex for more than forty years. And, with
the city’s careful planning for the future, Plano citizens will continue to experience a quality of life that is second to none.

Plano is recognized as best-planned community.
Plano has received national and statewide recognition as one of the best-planned communities in the nation. With over 65,000 housing units and over 14 million square
feet of retail space, Plano is approaching its growth capacity. The focus of planning efforts now centers on redevelopment and revitalization. One of the finest examples of Plano’s planning efforts is the nationally recognized revitalization of its Downtown area, with
its delightful new cafés, tea rooms, the market, theater
and shops.

In its commitment as a City of Excellence, the City Council has set forth the following goals:

  • Premier City for Families – Includes plan to facilitate full integration of the City’s emergency response capability with private sector organizations in the City of Plano. Work also continues on the proposed regional performing arts center.
  • Major Business Center – Includes plans for continuation of downtown development.
  • Safe and Efficient Travel – Includes support for red-light-running legislation.
  • Safe, Livable Neighborhoods – The city has developed a plan for transition and revitalization of neighborhoods.
  • Service Excellence – A City Council sub-committee will continue to meet monthly with representatives from PISD Board of Trustees and staff to discuss areas of mutual concern.

Plano’s financial outlook is strong and stable.
The vibrancy of Plano’s business community is unsurpassed, as it continues to attract, retain and expand its businesses. These businesses provide employment opportunities for its citizens, and economic growth which brings value to Plano’s tax rolls. The city has a solid, financial balance sheet, valued in excess of $20 billion. This financial stability, and strong financial management by the City Council accounts for a “AAA” rating by no less than three bond rating companies.

There are enough lane miles of roadways and alleys in the City of Plano to build a one-lane roadway from Fairbanks, Alaska to Houston, Texas. But the city maintains these roadways, as well as park areas and other city assets with one of the lowest tax rates in the Metroplex, and without issuing additional debt.

Plano, what an exciting place to live and work!
There is no doubt that Plano, with its All American City designation, will continue to be an exciting and positive place in which to live and work. As Sally Bane, Plano Economic Development Board Director, said in the State of the City Address for 2003, “Plano is blessed in so many ways. We are a very special city.”
