The social media engineer applies critical problem solving and programming knowledge to various social media areas. This may include creating a Facebook application or integrating social media into various websites and applications.

Education Requirements:

  • HTML 5 & CSS 3
  • At least 1 web-based programming language (PHP, ASP.NET, Ruby, etc.)
  • Knowledge of Facebook Developer APIs and OpenGraph
  • Knowledge of Twitter APIs
  • User Experience/User Interface Design (Senior level position)

  • Marketing (Senior level position)

Social Media Communications Manager/Director

A communications manager is the person most likely to be responsible for posting on social media outlets and interacting with the public.

Education requirements:

  • Strong written communication
  • Public speaking
  • Marketing
  • Statistics & Analytics
  • Psychology & Sociology (Senior level position)

In addition to these requirements, there are additional skills and experience that would augment the social media positions above. As social media progresses more into sharing images and video, it becomes more important to express some degree of proficiency in skills such as graphic design, photography, and video editing in order to convey your intended messages to your fans and followers.
