Atomic Design & Consulting brings you a quick rehash of some of the things in the world of social media that we’ve been talking about this week. In this edition, we have a Hobbit-themed video from Air New Zealand, a toddler sliding on the snow for the first time, and a song about that bass sung, well, in bass.

Air New Zealand’s safety video is out of this Middle Earth

In flight safety videos are usually a boring waste of time for many passengers who are just trying to get to their destination. But Air New Zealand decided to change things up a bit. They enlisted the help of Academy Award-winning director Peter Jackson to create a Hobbit-themed video for the airline. The video, which includes Air New Zealand flight attendants, cameos from stars of the Hobbit movie trilogy and Elijah Wood of Lord of the Rings fame, shows the highlights of the plane’s safety procedures with some big-budget panache.

Are millenials becoming wary of review sites?

According to MarketWatch in a survey conducted by Lithium Technologies, users (and especially millenials) are trusting recommendations more by their peers on social networks over review sites such as Yelp. This has caused a decline in the number of new business account setups and growth revenue for sites like Yelp and Angie’s List. Social networks like Facebook and Foursquare are capitalizing on this trend by leveraging location-based data and interests to serve users relevant ads. What does this mean for businesses looking to find new ways to reach customers? People are looking to their friends, not an ad, to steer them in the right direction.

Avi’s All About That Bass

Avi Kaplan, better known as the bass singer of a cappella group Pentatonix, uploaded a YouTube video of a cover of Meghan Trainor’s hit song, “All About That Bass.” You should check it out.

Get a Room, Facebook

Facebook announced this week their new app/product Rooms, a way to create message boards based on user-created subjects outside of Facebook. Users can post text, video, and images to the boards, as well as have administrative duties like banning members. It will be interesting to see how Facebook tries to use Rooms as a companion to their existing network.

GoPro scores with cute toddler ad

Action camera GoPro is usually more associated with more extreme activities like biking off a mountain or skydiving, but in this ad they use it to show a toddler’s first experience with the snow. Bravo, GoPro, bravo.

That’s all the time we have for this week, but keep watching our blog, Facebook and Twitter for more!
