Ebola virus strikes United States, social media responds with varied reactions

The big news in Dallas this week was that Thomas Eric Duncan, a Liberian man traveling to the US to see family, was confirmed as the first diagnosed case of the deadly Ebola virus. Immedialtely after, the news was filled with stories about the virus, some sought to inform, others to raise fear. Social media was no different, as users took to Twiiter, Facebook, etc. to express their views. This video explains how social media is used as both a valuable resource for information and a place for misinformation:

Jimmy Fallon, will.i.am are “Ew!”

Late night talk show host Jimmy Fallon teamed up with former Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am to write a song based on Fallon’s “Ew!” sketch from The Tonight Show. The song, also titled “Ew!”, has racked up over 8.1 million views in the first 3 days since being uploaded and is currently shooting up the iTunes charts as the #10 pop song. Looks like Jimmy and will.i.am have a hit!

Ello: the new Facebook or not?

Ello is a new social network that is gaining a lot of popularity as of late. The network is receiving tens of thousand of join requests per hour, based on its minimalist design and lack of ad clutter. However, brands who are always trying to look for the next Facebook or Twitter are also flocking to Ello, which lends the question: can an ad-free social network truly survive?

Taylor Hatala is YouTube’s newest dance sensation, and is only 11. Over 8.6 million people have watched her strut her stuff online, and she’s even perfomed on Ellen. She’ll definitely be one to watch in the future.
